What I Wore When…

I went to the ballet with my friend Aliyah.

She agreed to come with me under one condition: Make the freakin content!

At this point I had been yapping on and on about wanting to contribute to the modest clothing scene for so long that it had worn on her. So like the amazing friend she is, she manipulated me (for my own good).

If she goes I MUST take the shots. Hands were shook, agreements were made, and I am nothing if not a woman of my word.

Immediately, the image of a subtly shimmering, well structured set that I had caught a glimpse on the Sandro window came to mind. I tried it on in store and quite literally giggled in delight as my mind conjured up the endless ways to style the pieces. I am just a girl after all.

My older sister, Marwa, had taught me a few years back that I can only ever curate pieces in my closet. This means the following:

1- If you don’t absolutely love it, don’t buy it.

2- If you can’t see yourself wearing it in at least 5 different ways, don’t buy it.

3- Make sure the quality is good enough to withstand the test of time.

4- No rush, think on a piece before you pull the trigger, because in the end of the day you actually don’t need anything.

This has transformed the way I buy and consume because the majority of the things I own are intentional. Quality defeats quantity every time.

Aliyah and I headed over to the ballet with our makeup and outfits shimmering. After years of feeling restless without knowing where to direct my creative energy, I finally felt the warmth of inspiration again.

How lucky am I to have an Aliyah in my life? She sees me with eyes kind enough to make me believe in myself.

My name is Aateka, and the phenomenal people I am blessed enough to call friends and family are “The Company”. Welcome to Aateka & Co.
